George W. Zimmerman, DO,  FAOAO, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee surgery to include arthroscopic sports medicine, adult reconstructive total joint surgery and trauma.

Dr. Zimmerman is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his internship and orthopaedic residency at the St. Joseph's Health Center in Warren, Ohio, and then went on to serve a year-long Adult Reconstructive Total Joint Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania. 

After completing his training, Dr. Zimmerman served in the United States Army Active Duty for four years where he was a staff orthopedic surgeon and eventually the Chief of Orthopedics at both Payne Jones Army Community Hospital in Fort Polk, Louisiana, and Martin Army Community Hospital at Fort Benning, Georgia.  Dr. Zimmerman left active duty to practice orthopaedic surgery in Florida before returning to Columbus, Georgia in 2000. 

Dr. Zimmerman has held many leadership positions throughout his career to include membership on many hospital boards and committees. He has worked up the leadership chain of the American Osteopathic Association of Orthopedics from Treasurer and Secretary to Vice-President to eventual President.  Dr. Zimmerman is also President and managing partner of the St. Francis Orthopedic Institute. 

Dr. Zimmerman is involved in education and training of younger students and functions as a Senior Examiner for the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery, as well as a Clinical Educator for Osteopathic students rotating through orthopedics.

Dr. Zimmerman is a member of many professional associations to include:

  • The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
  • The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery,
  • The American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics.
  • The American Osteopathic Association.
  • Southern Orthopedic Association.
  • Georgia Orthopedic Society in Muskogee County Medical Society

Dr. Zimmerman has published several articles and two book chapters. 

He has presented many lectures locally and nationally on orthopedic topics related to his area of specialty expertise.
