John R. Stephenson, MD, brings more than 40 years of experience in orthopaedic surgery to the St. Francis Orthopedic Institute. A graduate of the University of the South and the University of Tennessee Medical School, Dr. Stephenson also served as a Medical Officer in the United States Army.

After completing his training at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis, TN, Dr. Stephenson moved to Columbus to practice in 1977. In 2003, he became part of the team at McCluskey Orthopaedic Surgery, which eventually helped establish the St. Francis Orthopaedic Institute.

Through the years, he has served two separate times as Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at St. Francis and also as Chairman of the Surgery Service Committee here. Other notable appointments include a term as President of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society and nearly 30 years as an Assistant Professor in Orthopaedics at Tulane University Medical School.

Dr. Stephenson has been recognized eight times by the American Medical Association as recipient of its Physician Recognition Award, one of its most prestigious acknowledgements, for his commitment to continuing professional education. Through the years, he has stayed at the front of orthopaedic innovations and developments by being actively involved in nearly 100 meetings and symposia.

In addition to his efforts in continuing education, Dr. Stephenson has made nearly 20 presentations to peer groups, while publishing more than a dozen scientific articles.

He is also a member of the Georgia Medical Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Georgia Orthopaedic Society, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.
